I’ve been attending several networking events recently, representing TCL Realty. As Marketing Manager, I realize there are many effective ways to promote our business but I feel one of the best ways is through good old-fashioned, face-to-face connections. Networking with other professionals builds rapport and establishes trust. Because of this, word-of-mouth advertising is highly effective. Referrals and recommendations confidently connect people to products and services. The adage holds much truth; “it’s not what you know, but who you know”.
Obviously, networking events are designed to bring people together, but there is an art to interacting and connecting well with others. Firstly, wear a nametag with your company logo and bring business cards with the goal to hand out several. Dress professionally. Upon meeting people, look them directly in the eyes and have a firm handshake. Be confident, friendly, and make a great first impression. Most professionals know how to conduct business and do these basic practices well. Secondly, have a memorable introduction that encompasses what your company is all about; the services you provide, and your role within the company. Be concise and succinct when doing this. No one cares to listen to someone who babbles on and on about what they do. Rather than be that person, ask thought-provoking, open-ended questions and listen well to the answers. Earnestly get to know the people you meet at each event. Ask questions that pertain to business but also find out a few personal details about the individuals you meet such as where they are from and what they enjoy doing outside of work. Work the room and don’t be shy! Don’t be afraid to join a conversation mid-stream but do this with tact and without interrupting. Lastly, follow up! Schedule B2B Meetings with a few of the people you met. Following up with one on one meetings helps solidify relationships and establishes business alliances which are key to building a strong network.
Overall and when conducted properly, networking can help promote and grow your company and build powerful business relationships. I have met many interesting and amazing people through the events I’ve attended and who provide products and/or services that I may need or someone I know may need.
